Is There Not A Cause?

August 30, 20234 min read

In the realm of life's profound questions, one inquiry often beckons our attention: is there not a cause worth fighting for? The notion of cause, laden with purpose and commitment, finds its essence in a profound desire to defend and advocate. This very concept, often overlooked, holds the potential to shape the course of our lives. As we venture into the world of purpose and commitment, we unravel the narrative of David and Goliath, and how it illuminates the significance of embracing a cause worth fighting for.

Our existence is intricately woven with questions of purpose and significance. Amidst the promises of scriptures and the divine plan mapped out for us, a fervent inquiry arises: what is our purpose, and what path should we tread? The correlation between doing and being is undeniable; our actions are an extension of our core essence. Yet, within this dichotomy lies the challenge of unearthing a purpose that resonates deeply with our being.

Considered against the backdrop of eternity, our presence on Earth becomes a tapestry woven with threads of purpose and destiny. Just as Mordecai's words to Esther resound with truth, "Could it be that you were born for such a time as this?" Every individual graces the world with a unique purpose. This recognition paves the way for the pursuit of a cause that mirrors our essence, a cause deserving of unwavering commitment and defense.

In exploring this journey of purpose and commitment, we turn to the timeless story of David and Goliath. Within this narrative lies a trove of wisdom that resonates with contemporary challenges. Picture the battlefield where the young shepherd boy, David, faces off against the imposing giant, Goliath. Their encounter becomes a pivotal moment of profound significance.

Within this narrative, a distinct exchange occurs between David and his older brother, Eliab. In this exchange, Eliab's voice emerges as a discouraging force. However, David's response echoes with conviction, "Is there not a cause?" This sentiment resonates deeply, reflecting the idea that a cause worth fighting for transcends the dissonance of discouragement. David's unwavering commitment to his cause – the welfare of his people – showcases the transformative power of embracing purpose amid adversity.

David's journey underscores the vital role of process in shaping one's purpose. The process, often marked by solitude and introspection, serves as a crucible for honing skills and refining character. David, once a shepherd tending to his flock, fully embraced his process. The quietude of the hillside became a canvas for mastering his slingshot skills and crafting poetic Psalms. His process positioned him for purpose, allowing him to transcend the mundane and become an instrument of divine intervention.

Obedience emerges as a catalyst that unlocks the gateway to purpose and opportunities beyond imagination. David's initial obedience to his father's seemingly mundane task led to a sequence of events culminating in his triumphant confrontation with Goliath. It is a reminder that seemingly ordinary acts of obedience pave the way for extraordinary opportunities.

Nevertheless, alongside the call to embrace purpose, voices of opposition surface. Goliath's thundering taunts, Eliab's belittling remarks, and even Saul's skepticism become tests challenging one's commitment. These voices, often loudest in moments of vulnerability, must be silenced to unlock the full potential of one's purpose.

In contemporary society, the call to action is diverse and varied. It might entail standing up against injustice, advocating for marginalized communities, or even extending a helping hand to those in need. Each cause is unique, each purpose an individual masterpiece. The echoes of David's resolute question – "Is there not a cause?" – reverberate through time, inviting us to align our lives with a cause worth fighting for.

As we navigate the complexities of life's journey, let us remember that purpose is not merely an abstract concept. It is a living, breathing force that calls us to action, encouraging us to break free from the shackles of doubt and comparison. Just as David's resolute commitment enabled him to conquer giants, our commitment to a cause that resonates with our core essence holds the power to transform lives and change the trajectory of history.

In conclusion, the pursuit of purpose and the embrace of a cause worth fighting for are intrinsically linked. David's journey serves as a timeless beacon, illuminating the significance of process, obedience, and unwavering commitment. As we traverse our own paths, may we possess the courage to silence voices of doubt, discover our unique causes, and become catalysts for positive change. The resounding question remains: Is there not a cause? The answer lies within each individual, waiting to be awakened and embraced.

So, I implore you, amidst life's myriad challenges and distractions, to contemplate the question: Is there not a cause?

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace, the absence of all things harmful, the presence of all thing beneficial, nothing missing, nothing broken. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
